Research Experience
Research Assistant, Existential Robotics Laboratory
University of California, San Diego | Advisor: Prof. Nikolay Atanasov
San Diego, CA | Oct 2025 - Present
- Developing an autonomous quadrotor hardware platform for fully onboard perception, state estimation, and control by integrating NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX with flight controller, sensors, power distribution, and communication modules.
- Designed, assembled, and configured drone hardware and embedded systems, including ESC wiring, firmware flashing, sensor calibration, and hardware-software integration.
- Deployed model predictive control (MPC) pipelines using acados and validated high-speed trajectory tracking in simulation and real-world flight environments.
- Collaborated with lab members to troubleshoot autonomous flight pipelines, document system architecture, and improve platform reliability and reproducibility.
Research Assistant, Active & Living Matter Lab
University of California, San Diego | Advisor: Prof. Tzer-Han Tan
San Diego, CA | Sep 2024 - Present
- Developing a robotic system inspired by the self-organizing, crystal-like formations of starfish embryos, focusing on collective behavior, autonomous coordination, and swarm robotics applications.
- Built a multi-threaded robot control system integrating computer vision, real-time robot state management, MQTT communication with ESP32 microcontrollers, and WebSocket-based frontend visualization.
- Implemented thread-safe state synchronization, PWM-based actuation, and bidirectional data flow between physical robots and simulation-trained reinforcement learning models.
- Conducted MATLAB-based analysis to model fluid dynamics interactions and validate formation stability.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Rocket Propulsion Laboratory
Sep 2023 - Oct 2025
- Used CAD development, simulation setup, Arduino programming, and design review criteria to build the rocket system as part of the Daedalus project team.
- Developed C++ control loops for multi-mode operation (Launch, Fueling, Dev, Abort), ensuring reliable execution under strict safety protocols.
- Integrated Ethernet-based communication modules (W5500) for robust data transmission between launch box and ground station.
- Conducted design reviews, CAD modeling, and simulation setup to verify rocket system reliability.
- Built on-board telemetry system using Arduino Nano, sensors, and custom PCBs to log velocity, altitude, attitude, and temperature.
- Applied SolidWorks and OpenRocket to model rocket aerodynamics and optimize apogee performance.
